Policy Brief: Climate-Induced Migration and Youth Resilience: Empowering Young People in the Face of Climate Change

Climate change is not a distant threat for young Ghanaians; it is already reshaping their livelihoods, education, and even the peace in their communities. Erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, and disappearing coastlines are forcing many, especially the youth, to migrate in search of survival. However, migration often brings new challenges, including overcrowded cities, informal employment, and fragile social structures.

To address these urgent challenges, the Youth Bridge Foundation (YBF), with support from the Embassy of Denmark in Ghana and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), has developed a Policy Brief on “Climate-Induced Migration and Youth Resilience: Empowering Young People in the Face of Climate Change”.

This brief builds on our 2024 project “Amplifying Youth Voices Towards A Climate Resilient Agenda and Violent Free Elections in Ghana,” which documented the real impacts of climate-induced migration on peace and security in the Northern region. Through case studies such as Fuveme, a coastal community battling severe erosion, the brief outlines the urgent need for Ghana to integrate climate resilience into migration management and youth development.

YBF believes that amplifying youth voices in national and global climate policy spaces is essential to turning this crisis into a pathway for development.
